THE VERMILLIONS

History is written in blood, and the civilizations that have risen and fallen have left us the artifacts of their life, passion and violence in stone images that are both barren and stirringly expressive. What we are, comes from who they were, and what they did. This intriguing truth led me to Paris, London and Rome to collect reference photos of statues and landmarks, which I have painted in oil, using vermillion as the predominant background color to symbolize the unavoidable blood-soaked presence of history. The human figures portrayed in the paintings, whether fantastical or exalted, invite introspection and bridge the gap between the ancient and the contemporary. By infusing classical and poster-esque street art elements, I offer a fresh perspective on our identities and the relevance of history in the present.

The Vermillions serves as a reminder of the ongoing significance of history. Through reinterpreting ancient tropes, I encourage viewers to reflect on their connection to the past and its continued relevance today. This collection of paintings invites exploration into the intersections of history, art, and personal identity, leaving a lasting impression on the viewer's artistic experience.
